Southern Highlands Men's Health Night
5th November 2018
Wingecarribee Health Association for Men Inc. (WHAM Inc) commenced their Southern Highlands Men’s Health Month on Monday night when over forty men and women gathered at the auditorium of St. Jude’s Anglican Church in Bowral to hear about Aged Care from Margaret Crothers, Advocate/Educator Regional Coordinator for Seniors Rights Services NSW.
Dr Terry Flynn, the Patron of WHAM Inc, welcomed everyone to what has become a very much anticipated event in the local shire and gave an update on works at the Bowral District Hospital. Dr Flynn expanded on what the new entrance to the Emergency Department might look like when finished and was excited with what the new Emergency Department would offer.
Margaret Crothers was very knowledgeable with the application of the Aged Care Act and delighted everyone with the fact that most probably only twenty percent of the population would rely upon its services. Seniors Rights Services is a part of the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) and provides Aged Care advocacy and legal advice to older people. Information on access to all aged care services are available at My Aged Care www.myagedcare.gov.au or Phone 1800 200 422
Southern Highlands Men's Health Night - Nov 12th 2018
St Vincent de Paul are the local area coordinator for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and on the second night of this year’s Southern Highlands Men’s Health Month the team from the Bowral branch were very well prepared for the numerous questions that they faced from the 30 people present in the auditorium at St Jude’s on Monday night. The NDIS is Australia’s first national Scheme for people with disability. It moves away from the previous system of providing block funding to agencies and community organisations, to direct funding for individuals. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The NDIS can provide all people with disability with information and connections to services in their communities such as doctors, sporting clubs, support groups, libraries and schools, as well as information about what support is provided by each state and territory government.
The process for accessing the NDIS can be confusing however the team at Unit 5, 44 - 48 Bowral Street, Bowral, NSW 2576 Open 9am-5pm Monday – Friday are only too willing to be of assistance. For further information https://www.ndis.gov.au/
Next Monday 19th November at 6 pm the theme will be Strokesafe. Local resident, stroke survivor and Stroke Foundation volunteer Maryanne Bawden will explain “What is a stoke?”, “How to recognise the signs of a stoke”, “What to do if someone is having a stroke” and more importantly “How to prevent a stroke”. Further details from Tom Carroll 0419482208 or email: carroll.tom747@gmail.com or check out the Wingecarribbee Health Association for Men’s (WHAM) website at: www.wingecarribeehealthassociationformen.org
